Co-creation project "The Story of Your Body"

What story does your body want to tell? What is hidden and wants to come out? Ten people embarked on a journey of discovery together, during (and before and after) 16 afternoons spread over 4 months, guided by myself and theater director Kris Nelis, in the buildings of laGeste in Ghent. The dance therapeutic project was part of my internship and final work at Agape Academy to become a dance and movement therapist.

Being different in dance: "People are afraid of authenticity"

January 6, 2022 - About dancing with fingertips, wheelchair wheels, locks of hair, feet that don't always listen, and with so much more.

On censorship, oxygen, and watching while listening.

What perspectives open up when we see difference as an invitation to reconsider our view of the 'other' and to delve deeper into ourselves to uncover what is invisible, unloved, vulnerable, and uncomfortable? What becomes possible when we harness all the imagination and dreams we possess to give everyone—regardless of a label—oxygen and inspiration to deepen their understanding of what they can achieve?

Dance makes you look differently. Dance gives the opportunity to look. Let's look at the other and at ourselves, with a gaze that does not mark the end of listening, but the beginning of it.

In "Diving deeply"

Do you know those moments when every fiber in your body bursts with fireworks? That's how I felt when I jumped into this dance project. I said YES to fear taking over and woke my body from its winter sleep. Dancing is like deep-diving, into encounters with yourself.

I'll take you back to a memory from a long, long time ago.

I am six years old. It's playtime. I climb to the top of the pyramid. How it sparkles invitingly in the sun. Carefully but confidently, I curl my hands around the pipes. My friends make sure my legs follow. We combine our strengths on this adventure, an adventure that also feels like coming home. This is flow. I feel light. I feel grounded, even though I am hanging meters above the playground. I feel free to choose where to move, without compromises. And suddenly: "INGE! What are you doing?! Get down from there! No! Stay! Don't move!" The teacher shouts. Out of nowhere. The message is clear: I shouldn't be up there, so high. It's dangerous. My heart pounds. The rest of my body freezes.

In her concern, the teacher set boundaries for me.

Borders grow in the shadow, in our fear of how powerful we can be and become. In the empty warehouse, I reconnect for a moment with my younger self, with her desire to achieve her dream, with her inner confidence, with her body that feels entirely hers, and also with that paralyzing voice. I move through it. Powerfully, gently, whatever is needed. I break through the limitation. I rediscover myself.

Webinar "Lessons about love and sexual pleasure from wheelchair users"

February 26, 2021

Four women who navigate life on wheels share their knowledge and practices around sexual pleasure: Inge Blockmans (Belgium), Alex Cowan (UK), Yvonne Dolonen (Norway), Jacqueline Kool (Netherlands).

As introduced on the IOSS website (International Online Sexology Supervisors): This is an interview discussion of four women who are wheelchair users. Alex Cowan (UK), Jacqueline Kool (Netherlands), Inge Bockmans (Belgium) and Yvonne Dolonen (Norway) have been actively involved in helping individuals understand what good sex and pleasure is about as well as how it can be achieved. They generously share their sexuality and relationship baggage, which is a combination of personal and professional experiences. They talk about sexual pleasure, sexual practices, sensations, love, attraction, relationships, motherhood, divorce, societal norms, pleasure, dance, and much more. This interview is incredibly inspiring and helps sexual health professionals better understand the beauty of sexuality. Get ready to broaden your mindset and feel this positively powerful experience!

Book (PhD): "Manoeuvres in the dark" - Manoeuvring in the dark
Re-creating (new) stories about sexuality and the body within/by women with a spinal cord injury

2014-2019

How free do people feel to express and experience their desires for intimacy and sexuality?
What are possible obstacles and how do we create openings (however fragile)?
How can you remain or become the owner of your body?
How do you deal with the gazes of others and the experience of your body from within?
What can you do to feel more at home in your own body and your desires?
How can you make pleasure central?

The book "Manoeuvres in the Dark" or "Manoeuvring in the Dark: Re-creating (new) narratives about sexuality and the body within/through women with a spinal cord injury" takes you through my master's research into the lived experiences of women who live with sexual desires, living with/in a body that undergoes great changes. Through individual conversations, group discussions, creative writing, dance, and photography, we found ways to reflect on bodies and intimate relationships and sometimes even transform them.

This research project touched me so deeply that I decided to delve further into how people can reclaim ownership of their own bodies and desires, and thus experience pleasure to the core of their being... and this through language and body work. The ingredients on this journey of discovery turn out to be curiosity, letting go of compelling sexual/social/... scripts, and unconditional love for yourself.
